Recycling 2009 with HTC
April 1, 2009
HTC invites schools and businesses to join in annual directory and cell phone recycling effort to benefit education.
HTC is partnering with the Horry County Solid Waste Authority, Wendy’s and Coastal Grand Mall for the 2009 directory and cell phone recycling program, April 1 through May 1, 2009. RECYCLING 2009 is the theme of this year’s program to benefit local schools, the community, and the environment. HTC encourages everyone to drop off their old telephone directories (HTC & any other directories accepted) or any used cell phones to an HTC office location in Carolina Forest, Conway, Socastee, Murrells Inlet, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Little River, or Loris. The goal is for each partnering school in Horry and Georgetown counties to collect at least 2,009 directories.
For each phone book recycled, HTC will donate 15¢ to the designated school. For each cell phone recycled, HTC will donate a minimum of $1.00 per phone all the way up to $39 per phone to the Horry County Schools’ Fund for Homeless Students. Plus, each person donating a directory or cell phone will receive a FREE 12 OZ FROSTY coupon from Wendy’s ® and buy one-get one coupons to Coastal Grand Mall! In addition to the coupons, the top three schools that recycle the most telephone books will receive prizes for the top participating classes including FREE Kids meals and prizes for the teachers. Please note that all Wendy’s coupons for schools will be distributed in May at the end of the campaign.
“HTC has sponsored the directory recycling program for over seventeen years and 2009 is no exception. Our goal for this campaign is to continue this joint effort that supports area schools and the environment-both of which are crucial to our children’s future. We feel this recycling partnership presents an excellent opportunity for schools to help raise funds for much needed classroom tools and individual school building needs. In addition, this program creates environmental awareness by involving students, parents, and communities- everyone benefits,” said Nicole Hyman, HTC Senior Marketing Coordinator.
"Wendy's is fortunate to be a partner with HTC in the directory and cell phone recycling program for 2009. To teach and encourage recycling with our youth will ensure a better tomorrow for all. The monetary rewards for schools with the top recycling efforts helps to purchase needed computers and classroom supplies. That's why, we, at Wendy's, are once again proud to be a partner with HTC,” said Elaine Carter, Director of Marketing for Wendy’s.
“Jungle Fun at Coastal Grand Mall is very pleased to be partnering with HTC in its directory and cell phone recycling program,” said Donna Smith, Vice President for Jungle Fun. “What a great way for children in the community to learn about the benefits of recycling and to gain first-hand experience in improving their environment. It's a valuable lesson that we hope will stay with them throughout their lifetime.”
When telephone books are recycled, they are used for such things as the manufacturing of ceiling tiles, textbooks, insulation, and envelopes for telephone bills. When cell phones are recycled, they are refurbished and redeployed in areas of the world where there are no land (wire) lines, or, where the cost of a new phone is prohibitive. Phones that cannot be refurbished or donated will be recycled and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
"It is always a pleasure to work with HTC on their phonebook recycling campaign because it meets the Solid Waste Authority's mission of "Protecting Tomorrow's Environment Today." This program has been very successful in the past and we look forward to another year of growth and success. It is the SWA's goal to participate in programs that promote and encourage recycling while at the same time save landfill space,” said Esther Murphy, Director of Recycling & Corporate Affairs.
Old directories and cell phones may be dropped off at any HTC branch office location. The Horry County Solid Waste Authority has provided a large recycling bin at the Conway HTC Business office to handle deliveries of 25 or more. HTC branch office locations will not be able to handle drops in excess of 25 directories. Please see the receptionist for the FREE Frosty and Buy One, Get One coupons from Coastal Grand Mall and to give credit to the preferred school.
In 2008, 60 public and private schools in Horry and Georgetown counties participated and raised $10,342.90 to benefit their schools. Over the last ten years, HTC has contributed a total of $94,403.60 to participating schools to purchase much needed new computer software and related materials.
